The 5 Best Wine Shops in Vancouver for When You Really Want to Impress

wine-shops-in-vancouver

Okay, imagine this with me. You’ve got guests coming over. Important ones, like your in-laws, or someone you’re really looking to win over. You’ve sorted out your decor and cleaned up around the house, so what’s the last thing to really make an impression?

For me, it’s wine. Good wine. A nice glass can really make a neat addition to any meal or hangout, assuming you’re trying to impress someone who doesn’t hate the stuff! I even like having one when I’m catching up with friends.

Being in a similar boat myself, I got a few of my friends to join me on my search for the best wine shops in Vancouver, and what an adventure we had! After a long, dizzying day, here are a few of our favorites from our long crawl.

1. Everything Wine

Well, with a name like that, how could we resist? Everything Wine might be a familiar name for Vancouverites, especially around the Lower Mainland. With six locations around BC, there’s likely to be one just around the bend.

Of course, just because they’re called Everything Wine doesn’t mean they just stock wine. Their liquor selection was impressive, with beers, ciders, and spirits available. They also have a wide selection of red, white, and even sparkling wines.

Their offerings are neatly categorized, making it easy to browse specific types. We couldn’t help but notice the customers with dogs in the store too, as the shop was also pet-friendly.

That being said, be prepared for a wait. We wanted to check out the wine-tasting events for ourselves, but a few customers also let us know about the long wait to receive a sample.

Pro tip:

We’d advise calling the store ahead to see if they’re open.  We got the store’s operating hours from the staff, but a few customers let us know of certain days when the store would close earlier than advertised.

2. Marquis Wine Cellars

If you’re not against driving out for a nice bottle, then Marquis Wine Cellars might be worth stopping by on your search. The shop was pointed out to us by more than a few locals who liked their selection and delivery services, so we just had to check it out.

What we found there didn’t disappoint us. The shop was home to a wide range of vintage wines, both local and international. These ranged from the classic red and white wines to bubbly and even dessert wines, leaving customers spoilt for choice.

We couldn’t help but notice their exclusive wines as well, mostly for just how many brands fell under this category! It’s a handy stack for finding lesser-known diamonds in the rough.

Pro tip:

Make your orders over the phone if possible. Their online support can take a while to respond to inquiries, especially for availability.

3. Broadway International Wine Shop

Anyone who knows how to appreciate a nice glass of wine also knows that it’s a drink fit to be shared and gifted. That was exactly what we had in mind when the Broadway International Wine Shop landed on our radar, a favorite among locals for gift wines!

The store had a surprisingly curated selection of beer, wine, and spirits. These included old and vintage wines, and even a number of gourmet edibles to pair with a bottle.

Their selection is rather limited in stock. We recommend asking the staff for a recommendation or checking availability ahead of time.

The shop also holds regular wine tasting events, with free and ticketed options. If you’re still up in the air about which wine you’d like, we recommend heading to one of their free tastings!

Pro tip:

Their refund and exchange policies could be very strict. If you end up with a bottle of corked wine, we’d recommend consulting carefully with the team.

4. The Sutton Place Wine Merchant

If smaller spots are more to your taste, then consider a visit to The Sutton Place Wine Merchant. This cozy little spot was a little hard to spot on our search, but with locals guiding us all throughout, we weren’t disappointed with what we found!

When we got a chance to browse their offerings, what caught our eye was the sheer variety of international wines. If you’re in the market for a global brand or in the mood to try something new, you might find something for your tastes here.

The staff were also happy to let us know about their regular stock rotations, with new products roughly every week to keep their selections fresh. If you haven’t found a favorite yet, another visit might surprise you!

Just have a budget in mind when you go in to browse. We noted higher prices for a number of their products, especially given their international offerings.

Pro tip:

With their location and layout in mind, we wouldn’t recommend showing up with a large group, at least if you value your personal space! The shop is fairly small, so navigating the store can get pretty cramped.

5. Liberty Wine Merchants

Now here’s a wine shop for folks looking for new favorites. Liberty Wine Merchants stocks a wide variety of wines, among other beers and ciders. These include rosé wines, champagne, and the classic reds and whites to garnish any table.

What really caught our attention during our visit was the presence of specialty and artisan wines. We especially appreciated their selection of gluten-free wines, allowing even those with food sensitivities to enjoy a nice glass.

These all came at reasonable prices, especially for a private wine shop! You won’t have to worry about breaking the bank for a bottle here.

That being said, we had to wander around the store for a while looking for a favorite. The shop was a bit difficult to navigate in terms of how their wines were categorized.

Pro tip:

Visit when you have a lot of time to spare. The shop is a bit difficult to navigate in terms of how the wines are categorized, so you’d spend a good amount of time just browsing. There’s also a wait time for staff recommendations and wine tasting.
