The 5 Best Blood Tests in Vancouver for Your Wellness Journey

blood-tests-in-vancouver
We extensively test and research all services we review. Here's why you can trust us.

I recently visited a clinic I found online, hoping for a smooth blood test—but it was a disaster from start to finish. On top of waiting for nearly half an hour past my appointment, the technician seemed inexperienced and failed to find a vein on multiple attempts.

Needless to say, I was left with bruises and had to go through the whole uncomfortable process again at another clinic just to get the test done properly.

This ordeal made me realize how crucial it is to find a reliable and efficient place for blood testing. To ensure I never had to go through that again, I enlisted the help of the rest of the Waterview Vancouver team and set out to identify the top blood testing clinics in Vancouver.

After contacting several clinics and talking to their patients to get firsthand accounts of their experiences, here are the ones that made it onto our list of the best blood test clinics in Vancouver.

How much does it cost to get a blood test in Vancouver?

It costs at least 50 CAD to get a blood test in Vancouver.

This is just an estimate, and the final cost will vary depending on your health insurance plan.

How We Chose

Accreditation: We prioritized laboratories accredited by recognized bodies like the College of American Pathologists (CAP) or the Canadian College of Medical Laboratory Technologists (CCMLT).
Physician Certifications: We considered the certifications of the professionals who interpret the blood test results. Certifications such as Board Certified Pathologist or Clinical Laboratory Scientist demonstrate expertise in their respective fields.
Test Accuracy: We evaluated the analytical validation data provided by the laboratories, including sensitivity, specificity, and accuracy rates.
Turnaround Time: We considered the turnaround time for test results. We also evaluated the availability of online access to test results.

LifeLabs is known for its professional and accurate blood test results.

They offer more than 1,000 tests, from your basic 25-hydroxy vitamin D to some cool genetic and naturopathic options. They even have at-home collection kits and home visits if you’re not keen on visiting the lab.

People liked that they could just book an appointment online and often get in without too much of a wait. They also find the instructions for the at-home kits straightforward, making it simple to collect samples and send them back for testing.

During our on-site observation of the blood testing process at LifeLabs, we noted how professional and friendly the staff were. Everyone we spoke with felt at ease, even those who confessed they’re usually terrified of needles.

The only complaint we’ve heard about this place is that parking can be a nightmare.

Pros

  • Accurate results
  • Wide range of tests
  • Convenient at-home options
  • Easy online booking
  • Friendly staff

Cons

  • Limited parking

Made sure my boyfriend was taken care of

“I am very grateful for the staffs here. I usually go to this location to get my blood test, and took my boyfriend here to get his done. He was not feeling well after the test, and the staff there did an amazing job taking care of him and also comforting me (I was scared because I’ve never seen anything like that before). They had other things to do but still made sure my boyfriend was taken care of, I really appreciate all the staffs at this location, than you!”

Didn’t feel anything during the blood test

This place is great! Only came here once so far for a blood test a few days before Christmas 2020. I did not have to wait at all! The vibe there was so cheerful! All the staff were incredibly nice, professional and communicated very well with each other. Didn’t feel anything during the blood test either! I will be coming to this location for all my blood tests from now on!”

VGH Outpatient is where you go if you want quick walk-in blood testing—no appointments necessary.

One of the first things we noticed was the lab’s cleanliness and organization, which contributed to a welcoming atmosphere. The staff is incredibly friendly, making the experience even more pleasant.

People we spoke to like how the receptionist makes them feel at ease. They also don’t delay in giving them any necessary paperwork needed before they can do the blood test. Whether you need a routine check like a CBC or a specialized hormone test, they handle it efficiently.

Several patients also mentioned that the phlebotomist was exceptionally gentle. No one got jabbed with needles—at least no one we spoke to.

For those needing more specific tests like HIV or even genetic testing, they do those here too. Regardless of the test, we observed the staff is quick to inform you about your results.

That said, we’ve heard from a few people that they don’t give you numbing cream beforehand. This is something to consider if you have low pain tolerance.

Pros

  • Quick walk-in blood testing
  • Friendly staff
  • Wide range of tests
  • Gentle phlebotomists
  • Fast results

Cons

  • No numbing cream

The blood taker was very talented

The blood taker was very talented as I am always a challenge to get blood from.

However, I think the staff are forgetting how frightened we are when we come in.

Also, some of us are given no time to get blood work done. Just a call to go now. Our intention is not to upset staff by being in a hurry. We just need to go when we need to go. I am grateful for all health care workers. Every single one. It would seem we are all a bit stressed out these days.

Way better than other blood work places

This is way better than other blood work places I’ve been to. Much safer Covid protocol. Not crowded, easy to book online with more time slots available, all connected with My-E-health. So don’t go. I like it this way 🙂

Gordon and Leslie Diamond Health Care Centre does a commendable job at making blood testing as painless as possible.

When we walked in, the place was pretty modern and clean. It was easy to find the blood testing area thanks to clear signs.

From what we’ve noted, the staff take into consideration those with horrid needle anxiety by being quick about the testing work.  They also have a numbing cream if needed.

Many reported that the actual blood collection process is efficient. We’re talking under 10 minutes from the moment you sit in the chair.

Others also appreciated the quick turnaround and how they handled everything hygienically.

If you come here for blood work, one thing to look out for is parking. Paid parking starts at 20 CAD, which we think is a bit pricey for a quick in-and-out blood test.

Pros

  • Painless blood testing
  • Clean facility
  • Efficient blood collection process
  • Quick turnaround time
  • Hygienic practices

Cons

  • Expensive parking

Professional kind, and caring on time service

Every time I have gone here, I have had nothing but professional kind, and caring on time service. The team members have always been very accommodating and they really care about you. Yes I had to wait a few minutes here and there but nothing major. Two thumbs up.

Process the results immediately

I go to the Outpatient Gordon and Leslie Diamond Health Care Centre for regular blood tests and have developed an amazing relationship with the good people there.  They are wonderfully friendly and accommodating and process the results immediately.  I discovered them when I needed to stop using LifeLabs (see my google review of their 750 W. Broadway location) and have never looked back!

Novavita Laboratory is where you go if you need any hormonal blood work done. They do testing for reproductive hormones like estrogen, progesterone, hCG, and more.

Almost everyone we talked to commented on the clean facility and the competent staff.

Many also liked how quick the process was once your appointment time came. Some even told us Novavita is one of the smoothest labs they’ve been to.

Here, people are put at ease thanks to the explanation of each step before drawing blood.

However, we noted that this place doesn’t do DRVVT/Lupus anticoagulant, INR, PTT, or glucose tolerance testing because those tests are too time-sensitive.

Also, if you need Karyotype or Y-microdeletion testing, you can only do it from Monday to Thursday before 2 PM.

And Novavita is pretty strict about this—no walk-ins for bloodwork.

Pros

  • Clean facility
  • Competent staff
  • Quick process
  • Clear explanations
  • Peaceful environment

Cons

  • Limited testing
  • Restricted hours for Karyotype/Y-microdeletion testing
  • No walk-ins allowed

You never have to wait to get your blood test done

I’m so happy I found this hidden gem in the midst of other labs which tend to have huge wait times and bad customer service.

The staff are so friendly and you never have to wait to get your blood test done. I highly recommend them.

The results come out the same day

This is one of the most convenient lab for me. It is next to Olive and the results come out the same day. Most of important all, the staff there are very friendly and helpful. Highly recommend.

EvokeLife is where you go for holistic, comprehensive bloodtesting. People who come here for testing come looking for more than just a simple blood test.

The center tests over 50 blood markers, which is way more than your usual blood test. Patients love this because it means they get a thorough understanding of their health issues and what they’re lacking.

The staff here are genuinely helpful and knowledgeable. They explain everything in a way that makes sense, even if you’re not a medical expert.

Other patients we talked to love the combination of blood tests with DNA data. They look at everything—from how you respond to exercise and manage stress to how well you detoxify chemicals.

However, one downside we heard is that the process can be a bit time-consuming. It’s not just an in-and-out affair.

Pros

  • Comprehensive blood testing (50+ markers)
  • Helpful staff
  • Combines blood tests with DNA data
  • In-depth understanding of health issues

Cons

  • Time-consuming process
