Vancouver has a way of sneaking creativity into everyday life. Wander down a side street, and you might spot a colourful mural.
Art is everywhere, and it’s impossible to start wondering if you could create your own. Because that’s the charm of the city’s art scene: it invites you to participate.
Whether that’s painting or sketching, there’s a workshop for every skill level. Over the past few weeks, our team explored these spaces. We chatted with instructors and even listened to participants’ experiences to see which workshops truly spark creativity.
Here are the top art and painting workshops in Vancouver that also inspired us to be more creative.
How much do art workshops cost in Vancouver?
Art workshops in Vancouver typically cost between CAD 15–80 per session, depending on the type and length. Community classes or drop-in sessions are on the lower end, around CAD 15–30.
1. Dene Croft Studios & Gallery

Address: 118 Pemberton Ave, North Vancouver
Phone: +1 604-250-5562
Business hours:
- Monday to Friday: 10 AM – 9 PM
- Saturday to Sunday: Closed
Dene Croft Studios & Gallery stood out for its deeply rooted focus on traditional painting skills. Their strongest areas are oil and acrylic painting, particularly portraiture and figure studies.
Dene’s teaching leans heavily into classical methods like Grisaille under-painting. It teaches careful value control and realistic flesh-tone mixing.
The weekend workshops, especially the two-day portrait sessions, are structured and intensive without being overwhelming. We also loved that group sizes are kept small for more individualised attention.
The workshops already cover composition, colour mixing, mood through abstraction, and historical approaches from well-known portrait painters.
People also loved the demonstrations. Watching Dene paint in real time is a key learning moment for many students.
After that, there’s time to apply the lesson straight away, followed by individual feedback. That rhythm seems to help students understand concepts more easily.
They also offer ongoing studio mentoring, individual lessons, atelier drawing classes, and monthly watercolour workshops.
Students also mentioned how patient, kind, and encouraging Dene is. Most of them feel valued regardless of experience level, which makes them beginner-friendly.
On the other hand, this isn’t an ideal option for those looking for instant availability or casual drop-in sessions. They’re very in demand, and there’s always a long waiting list.
Dene makes the whole art things as a very tangible and easy thing
“I like the vibe here, everyone is friendly and of course I can learn new painting techniques under the amazing guidance from Dene. It is a small business as it is two layer cultural and aesthetic place. And also it is a big family, u can communicate with other art students, diving into the world of arts. A piece of coockie, a cup of coffee … Dene makes the whole art things as a very tangible and easy thing. And yeah, the workshops are helpful and awesome too. Highly recommended to people who wants to thrive in the arts.”

Dene is an amazing artist and teacher
“The studio is my favorite place to be! Dene is an amazing artist and teacher. The studio also has an awesome community of local artists and students that you can learn from and chat with daily. It is a very warm and welcoming environment. I would highly recommend Dene’s studio to all levels of creatives/artists. There is something for everyone.”

2. Canvas Method

Address: 1610 Pandora St
Contact: [email protected]
Business hours:
- Monday to Tuesday: 9 AM – 9:30 PM
- Wednesday: 6:15 PM – 9:30 PM
- Thursday to Sunday: 9 AM – 9:30 PM
Canvas Method’s workshops are incredibly planned. Courses give enough time to work through assignments properly, which makes a big difference.
Several people pointed out noticeable shifts in how they approach drawing and painting, not just small technical improvements.
We saw that there’s a strong focus on understanding the process, making conscious choices, and pushing past comfort zones. This explains why people talked about creative breakthroughs.
The instructors are a major reason the workshops land so well. A lot of students loved that their instructors’ feedback is both technically sharp and emotionally encouraging.
What Canvas Method does best is depth. Programs run over 11 hours and dive into techniques across oils, acrylics, watercolours, charcoal, and pastels.
The range of workshops is impressive. They cover everything from drawing basics to portrait and landscape painting.
Ongoing weekly classes and intensive weekend sessions also help committed artists maintain momentum.
That said, all of these come with a higher price point.
Feedback from him and others in the class is super helpful
“Justin is really knowledgeable about a broad range of art topics from classical painting to abstract, and also about the psychological journey every artist is on when they create. I really liked that he gave us visual examples of what the assignments needed to achieve. He is generous, gentle and honest. Feedback from him and others in the class is super helpful.”

Patient and communicative in his teaching
“Taking Justin’s Disrupted Realism class was a rewarding experience. I appreciated the process of breaking down and reconstructing my work. It was an exercise in being courageous and painting over parts of the original underpainting that once felt perfect, but it became a powerful exercise in both letting go and building up. Justin was patient and communicative in his teaching. Through this process, I learned not only new techniques but also a more fluid and fearless approach to creating art.”

3. Intuitive Art Beat

Address: 888 Kingsway #208
Phone: +1 778 846 5055
Business hours:
- Monday to Thursday: Closed
- Friday: 10 AM – 12 PM
- Saturday to Sunday: Closed
Intuitive Art Beat isn’t the usual step-by-step workshop. Everything here is designed around intuitive painting, mixing music and breathwork. A lot of people even compared it to therapy.
People come here with little to no art experience and end up discovering a side of their creativity they didn’t know existed.
The setup makes it easy to get into. Classes are small, with a max of eight participants. This way, Zohar (the founder) can give plenty of attention to everyone.
She’s also praised for her energy, warmth, and ability to draw out individual potential without pressure.
We love how each person gets their own space, and the studio provides all the tools and materials. Kids, adults, and even corporate groups can join too.
Compared to other art workshops in Vancouver that focus on technique, replication, or polished outcomes, Intuitive Art Beat does it differently. This studio leans hard into art as emotional exploration and healing.
For beginners, especially, their approach seems to remove the intimidation factor entirely. You’re not “bad at art” here because there’s no scale you’re being measured against.
That said, it’s not ideal for people who want technical guidance or structured lessons.
Her knowledge of art and her confidence really stood out
“Zohar is a true professional! She led my daughter and her friends through a themed art activity for two full hours, keeping 15 kids engaged, inspired, and having fun the entire time. Her knowledge of art, combined with her calm and confident way of managing a large group, really stood out. The kids were excited, focused, and proud of what they created. Highly recommended!”

A place where I can explore my creativity, laugh and meet wonderful people
“I stumbled upon Intuitive Art Beat 4 years ago when I was looking for something else to do than my usual work & activities. I needed a place where I could completely switch off and this place is exactly that. A place where I can explore my creativity, laugh and meet wonderful people from all walks of life. Zohar’s energy is intoxicating and she makes each and every class interesting and fun. You can tell she cares about each of her students and makes sure everyone is not only learning but having fun as well. I went with no art experience and after all these years, I can’t say that anymore. She has a way of bringing out the talent of each individual, doesn’t matter what their skill sets are. She is a wonderful teacher and an amazing human. Highly recommend this place!!!!”

4. Art From The Heart

Address: 595 Burrard St #305
Contact: [email protected]
Business hours:
- Monday to Friday: 6 AM – 6 PM
- Saturday to Sunday: Closed
Art From The Heart has built a reputation for turning painting into a fun, social, and stress-free experience.
Their Guided Paint Nights are the main draw since they’re lively and social. Sometimes they happen in their studio, in the park, or in the plaza.
These sessions often include drinks in a “paint and sip” style, music, and decorations. It’s actually great for hanging out with friends, date night, or even going solo and meeting new people.
Sessions come with everything needed, and all ages and abilities are welcome. There are even kids’ sessions, so it works for families as well. We also loved that the themes change often, so there’s always something new to try.
The instructors are a big part of what makes the experience so enjoyable. They’re encouraging, patient, and always ready to help.
They also take care of setup and cleanup, so participants can focus entirely on having fun and getting creative.
Just keep in mind that the atmosphere can get loud sometimes because of the music and chatter. Some people found it hard to hear instructions.
Serious painters looking for technical workshops might also find it a bit casual.
All the teachers are amazing
“Love love love doing paint nights with friends here! It is such a fun atmosphere and all the options for paintings are so cute it’s hard to pick which night to do! All the teachers are amazing but Bay is by far my favourite, her talent is beyond. She is so helpful and makes you feel so comfortable if your skills are not great like mine. My paintings always end up coming out better then I expected where she’s there to help! Truly one of my favourite girls nights, can’t wait to go again.”

She made it so easy, as most of us had little to no painting experience
“I did a paint night with a couple friends 5 years ago and this Saturday I booked a private event for my 30th with 15 friends and it was amazing. Maria is super accommodating for private events and the process was seamless. The event itself was so much fun, Ruvè was our instructor and she was the sweetest. She was so patient with us and made it so easy as most of us had little to none painting experience. Everyone really enjoyed their time and said they would do it again.”

Peaceful Art Studio nurtures young artists in a supportive and creative environment. They offer classes that range from beginner to advanced levels.
Students learn the basics of sketching alongside digital art, animation, and portfolio prep for those thinking about future creative paths.
We loved their structure because it allows students to progress at their own pace. The small class sizes—six students per instructor—also mean each child gets plenty of attention and support.
With professionals teaching animation and portfolio development, the team brings real-world experience.
Classes are hands-on and playful. Sometimes, the kids get independent projects and daily visual diary exercises to encourage their steady progress.
The studio has a unique mix of Eastern and Western teaching styles and runs everything bilingually (English and Mandarin).
There are a couple of things to keep in mind, though. They’re in high demand, so spots can fill up fast.
I have seen my son’s improvement over the last year to present because of them
“My son Jasper has been learning drawing at peaceful art studios since he was 5 years old. I have seemed his improvement over the last year to present. He enjoyed the drawing class so much! He has made new friends and the instructors are so nice and patient with him. I have highly recommended for my friends to come to Peaceful Art Studio for their kids who like to work on creatives and artists.”
