When I was a kid, I used to get totally jealous of houses with unique staircases. There’s just something magical about them, especially the floating ones. They add so much personality to a space. Who wouldn’t be fascinated by that?
I’m sure I’m not the only one, but having a custom staircase in my own home has always been a bit of a dream.
So, for anyone ready to make that dream a reality, we’ve got you covered. Our team hunted down the best staircase builders in Vancouver, checking out their craftsmanship and how quickly they can get the job done.
Here are the ones we’d actually recommend.
How much does a custom staircase cost in Vancouver?
A custom staircase in Vancouver usually starts around $15,000 for high-end architectural designs and can go above $45,000 for luxury or very complex builds. Simpler wood stair renovations or railing replacements often fall between $2,000 and $8,000.
1. Ice Blue Steel Ltd

Address: 1730 Coast Meridian Rd #104, Port Coquitlam
Phone: +1 604-726-1348
Business hours:
- Monday to Sunday: 7 AM – 7 PM
Ice Blue Steel is especially strong when it comes to custom metal staircases mixed with glass. They do glass railings, cable rail systems, and those steel-and-wood combinations.
A lot of their work fits perfectly into Vancouver’s contemporary homes. We found the team especially great for condos and townhouses, where keeping things open and light really matters.
When we looked into their designs, we fell in love with the way they maximise space.
The process is thorough, from the first consultation through measuring and installation. The team brings physical samples, shares photos of past projects, and even offers practical recommendations.
They handle everything in-house too, including design, fabrication, delivery, and installation. That kind of control usually means fewer surprises on installation day.
We also appreciate that they’re flexible in working within different budgets.
This service comes from their 20+ years of local experience. Their Canadian Welding Bureau (CWB) certification also seals the deal that they’re very reliable.
The only potential downside we can see is the demand. Everyone seems to want to book them, so we suggest calling them in advance.
He continued to service us until we were completely satisfied
“Moh from Ice Blue Steel is a ‘yes’ person and is a perfectionist. He carefully reviewed our staircase and was able to recommend the most optimal design at a reasonable price. He continued to service us until we were completely satisfied. We are happy to recommend him.”

They made my dream staircase come true
“We are so glad we chose ICE BLUE for our waterfall stairs! The communication between the team leader – Moe; the attention to detail works (they came on site many times for measurements to guarantee precise engineering drawings); and the professionalism (whole welding team came on site for my fussy requirements) make my dream come true!!!”

For anyone looking for exterior stairs builders in Vancouver, Springvan Carpentry and Construction is a great choice.
We looked through their portfolio, and their works are properly framed and built to handle real-world weather.
Most of their stair work is tied to decks, garden entries, main entrances, and multi-level yards.
Clients highlighted the sturdy builds using cedar and composite materials, especially in deck-connected stair systems.
The fact that they’re certified Trex Pro installers also adds credibility. That means they know how to properly install high-end composite materials, and the work is backed by manufacturer warranties.
One project that we heard involved a new deck and a fire escape staircase. What stood out was how responsive and solution-focused the team was during the planning.
They worked efficiently through heavy rainfall and still finished on time.
The team’s work is clearly practical and structure-first. Interior staircases don’t seem to be their focus, so anyone looking for a dramatic indoor feature would probably be better off elsewhere.
The project went very smoothly
“I recently had Paul and his team build a new deck and fire escape staircase on a house I own. I found Paul and the team to be very responsive and solution oriented when organizing the final details. His team worked efficiently through the fall monsoon season. the project went very smoothly, was finished on time and was a high quality build. I highly recommend Paul and his team for any projects you may have!”

Would recommend 100%
“Springvan came in at the end of a year long renovation to add fencing of two types, one quite unique, a deck, outside platform/staircases, and also to address a drainage issue. They were by far the best and most hard working crew of all the crews who went through our place. They never dropped the ball, not once , and their communications were the best of all the crews that we dealt with over the entire project(s). Would recommend 100% and they will be our first call when we need any further work.”

Cut Above Carpentry & General Contracting is strong in complex renovations. They know how to deal with custom interior stair upgrades, tricky structural fixes, and open-concept designs.
Their work leans into clean, modern styles like open risers, glass panels, and hardwood winders. At the same time, they also build practical options like closed-stringer stairs.
A client’s story stood out during our research. In a project that included front stairs, a deck, and walkways, they discovered the home’s base structure wasn’t sturdy.
Instead of working around it, they rebuilt the foundation properly. That says a lot about priorities and how they work. They focus on structure first, then finishing touches.
That same client also mentioned strong communication and patience throughout the project.
They seem particularly well-suited for renovation projects in older homes or basement remodels where stairs need to blend seamlessly into the existing space.
As a smaller, owner-operated company led by Mark Mitchell, they likely give projects a lot of personal attention.
The trade-off is that the turnaround time might be longer. It seems to be worth it, though, because of the quality and detail they do.
Communication was excellent throughout the project
“We had a great experience with Cut Above Carpentry. They helped us build a new deck, concrete walkways, and front stairs — everything turned out beautiful and solid. During construction, they discovered that the base structure of our house wasn’t sturdy, and they took the time to properly rebuild a new foundation to ensure the house was safe and well-supported. Communication was excellent throughout the project, and they were very patient and responsive as they worked with us. Highly recommend them for their professionalism, quality work, and honesty. Thanks Mark and the Cut Above team!”

They’re very great to work with
“…Mark was great to work with! He was very helpful during the design, coming up with some great ideas, and approaches, and he and his team did a fantastic job bringing it to life and completely transforming our tired, old concrete stairs into a beautiful set of entrance stairs (as well as garden bed and support beam) that are rock solid and very attractive…”

4. Cypress Railings & Gates

Address: 1709 Welch St, North Vancouver

Business hours:
- Monday to Friday: 8 AM – 5 PM
- Saturday to Sunday: Closed
Cypress Railings & Gates has been around since 2005. Over the years, they’ve built a reputation for creating metal stairs done well.
They build straight staircases, spiral stairs, and especially floating stairs. Now, floating stairs aren’t simple to pull off. They need strong internal support while still looking light and modern.
Because Cypress handles welding, fabrication, and installation in-house, they seem well set up for that kind of detailed structural work.
A big part of what they do too, is pairing staircases with matching railings. Frameless glass railings are one of their specialities, along with stainless steel and hybrid systems that combine materials.
We also liked that they offer financing between $1,000 and $40,000 with no upfront cost. It can make bigger stair projects easier to manage financially
However, we’ve heard from a client that it took over a month just to get a quote for a railing. After an initial response asking for measurements, communication stopped.
“Old concrete stairs were breaking apart, railing falling off, were getting dangerous. Great replacement stairs provided by Cypress Railings & Gates. Demolished the old and installed new the next day. Great work, attention to the details. Touched up paint from some transport rubbing. Very happy with their work!”

“We had some unexpected damage to our railing off of our front stairs & called Cypress who responded so quickly and within no time at all had people out to take measurements and had a new railing made and installed in record time ! Their customer service goes above and beyond which we already knew from having two gates installed by them previously. As an added bonus their prices are fair and reasonable, thank you Cypress Railings & Gates”

South Fraser Stairs really shine when it comes to open-rise and floating designs.
Straight-run stairs and clean styles are their signature. They often pair it with stainless steel or custom iron elements that give their work a contemporary look.
We were also impressed with their metalwork. Their selection of spindles, posts, and stainless steel handrails includes hand-forged options and tubing spindles.
One thing that separates them from many traditional staircase contractors is their emphasis on prefabricated custom stairs.
Rather than building everything onsite in the most conventional way, they focus on detailed prefabrication with high-end finishing.
It also explains why they can ship worldwide. It’s not something we saw from other local stair builders.
When we spoke to clients, most mentioned the same themes: projects are completed on time, and details are executed carefully.
On the flip side, some people have had trouble reaching them by phone.
This company truly provides high quality at reasonable prices
“South Fraser Stairs just finished our curved stairs renovation and we are so happy with the outcome. The stairs are just beautiful. Thank you John for your advise, I’m so glad that I’ve listened to for all the changes to the original project. Victor, our installer was amazing, workmanship and attention to details outstanding. This company truly provides high quality at reasonable prices.”
