Customer Reviews
One of the few places in Vancouver that can style black hair well! Kenta was extremely easy going when it came to helping me feel out what I wanted to get done.
The experience itself was relaxing and expedient, the people working there are friendly, and the vibes are on point. Not much else I can say – the pictures speak for themselves.

The only spot you should come for a relaxer!!!! Seriously.
I used boxed relaxers for years thinking that it’s the same ones they use in the salons to save money but it’s not .
Ammerose is extremely professional and only uses the best products especially for black hair. Obviously it’ll cost you more than a regular $20 box relaxer but it’s 100% worth it .

A salon that actively uplifts its community while delivering gorgeous results is always a huge win.
Founded by Ethiopian immigrants, Emebet Belay & Abraham Berhe, in the early nineties, Afro Hair Studio introduced authentic East African styling techniques to the Canadian beauty scene.
When I visited them for a consultation, I was thoroughly impressed by their inclusive approach and their solid stock of natural products suited for every single curl type. The stylists are also exceptionally trained in diverse weave applications.
The business has grown into a highly successful enterprise over the last quarter-century, even hosting specialized workshops to teach fundamental hair care to families.
Though clients do have to navigate separate communication protocols depending on whether they have a retail question or need to book a service.

A couple of days ago I went to an excellent barber shop called the Afro Hair Studio. The vibe of the place was amazing, the music taste was exceptional, and the staff were very friendly. When I walked into the shop, I instantly felt welcomed, and we barley had to wait to get seated in the barber’s chair. I went into the shop to get a skin fade and when the hair cut was done, I looked in the mirror and instantly loved the haircut.

Amazing experience here! I have struggled to find black owned hair businesses in Vancouver. This one is it! Relatively easy to book an appointment by calling and they even followed up the day before with a reminder call, which I appreciated. Staff were so friendly and welcoming. The salon is clean and tidy, I loved their music too. The woman who braided my hair was knowledgeable and so talented. She flawlessly and quickly did 6 cornrows with tiny braids in between each for me.

Elsa is an amazing women! A small business owner, a mother, a wife and a valuable member of her community. When I first moved to Van in 2012 from Toronto, I could not find a black hair stylist downtown. I finally tried a few places but in the end I chose Elsa’s Salon. She has a great location and she does such a great job with my hair. I’m so proud to only let her cut and style my hair. Check her out.

This place is amazing! Finally there’s a friendly, professional place to that serves curly haired people.
I opted for boho braids. Usually this hairstyle takes 6-8 hours. These ladies only took 4hrs. The chairs were so comfortable and I’ve never had so many compliments on my hairstyle.
This place serves all textures of hair. I love it and would highly recommend it to any race of people. Black, white, purple it doesn’t matter, if you have curly hair, you will be happy!

A New Afra Hair Designs Salon employs dedicated estheticians who provide a range of services, including hair treatments and professional makeup artistry. This means you can get a complete makeover in one place!
While their range of services is impressive, what we appreciate the most is their staff. The team stays current with industry developments and maintains a close-knit environment for their visitors.
In fact, the salon even provides complimentary hot and cold beverages, along with light meals for patrons undergoing lengthy braiding sessions. These snacks are a thoughtful addition for those spending several hours in the chair.
However, it’s worth being aware that the business enforces a strict financial penalty for clients arriving twenty minutes late, requiring careful scheduling on your end.

Since moving to Vancouver, the team at A New Afra has been doing my hair, and I have been left extremely satisfied at all times. My latest style was a sew-in, and it was well done, the stitching was secure up to the point when I went to remove it to get a wash and deep treat.
