We extensively test and research all services we review. Here's why you can trust us.
  • Experience and Specialization: We chose lawyers with extensive experience specifically in tax law, ensuring they have a deep understanding of both personal and corporate tax matters.
  • Communication Skills: We prioritized lawyers who explain complex tax issues clearly and keep clients updated throughout the process. We reviewed this through client feedback.
  • Professionalism: Our selected lawyers maintain a high standard of professionalism. They show respect, discretion, and dedication to achieving the best outcomes for their clients.
  • Fees and Billing Structure: We considered lawyers who offer transparent pricing, whether through hourly rates or flat fees.

One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned in adulting? Pay your taxes. Seriously, it’s one of those things that make me feel like a real, responsible human being.

But let’s be honest, taxes can get confusing. There are so many different types and half of the time, I wonder if I really need to pay for a particular one.

So when our team got the assignment to dig into the best tax lawyers in Vancouver, we knew we had to do it right. I mean, why waste the chance to find experts who can actually help when things get… taxing?

If you’re curious about who we found and how they can make your tax life easier, keep on reading!

How much do tax lawyer services cost in Vancouver?

Tax lawyer services in Vancouver usually cost between $250 CAD to $600 CAD per hour, depending on the lawyer’s experience and the complexity of the case. Some may also offer flat fees for specific services.

Thorsteinssons LLP is Canada’s top tax law firm, and they focus only on tax. They’ve handled corporate tax planning, personal estate matters, and even courtroom battles.

Plus, with over 70 lawyers, you’re getting the resources of a large firm but without losing that specialized focus.

We like how they explain complicated tax issues in a way that’s easy to follow. A lot of firms can make you feel lost in legal talk, but they seem to avoid that. Clients also say they’re quick to respond and really take the time to understand your needs.

One standout we heard about was Rosemary Anderson. She helped a client with a Goods and Services Tax (GST) issue in small claims court and completely outshone the other side’s expert. Even the judge noticed.

That said, they’re on the expensive side. If you’re looking for a bargain, this probably isn’t it. But if you’re dealing with tricky or high-stakes tax matters, you’re paying for top-level expertise.

We also like that they regularly update a blog and engage with the latest tax changes. This shows they’re serious about staging current and educating their clients.

Pros

  • Top expertise in tax law
  • Large team
  • Clear communication
  • Responsive and client-focused
  • Strong courtroom skills
  • Stays updated

Cons

  • Higher pricing

Hands down, the most impressive lawyer we have worked with

“Thorsteinssons is THE pre-eminent tax law firm because of partners like Rick Wong. He helped our family with a transfer of property from the family to the company. He is super knowledgeable, highly organized and hands down the most impressive lawyer we have ever had the good fortune to work with.”

Professional, knowledgeable, and detailed

“Lawyer Zheting Su helped me with my GST and Income tax appeal. She is a super professional, knowledgeable and detailed lawyer. I highly recommend her if you are also suffering from tax issues”

Liang Tax Lawyers is a boutique firm that focuses only on tax, trust, and estate planning.

We think this specialization lets them offer more than just legal advice. They also create custom solutions for tough problems like corporate reorganizations, business transitions, and wealth preservation.

Their collaborative approach caught our attention. They don’t just work with clients. They also team up with accountants and other advisors to create plans that truly fit.

From our conversations with other legal professionals, we learned that Sam (one of their senior lawyers) is highly respected. Other lawyers even go to him for advice on complex tax matters, especially for high-net-worth clients.

We also liked the firm’s efficiency. Because they’re small, you get direct attention from their lawyers, which feels more personal.

The downside is that they might not always be available right away if they’re busy working on multiple cases at once.

That said, their prices are reasonable, especially for the quality of service you get. Their practical setup helps keep costs lower than what you’d find at bigger firms.

Pros

  • Specialized expertise in tax, trust, and estate planning
  • Custom solutions for complex cases
  • Collaborative approach
  • Highly respected lawyers
  • Personalized service
  • Reasonable pricing

Cons

  • Limited availability at times

He patiently listened and gave some helpful advice

“Sam Liang was a great help to me recently when I had some tax questions. He very patiently listened to my rambling explanation of my issues, somehow made sense of it, and then gave me some very helpful advice in a clear and concise manner. I would highly recommend his services and would definitely use him going forwards!”

His patience in helping customers is rare

“I hired Sam from Liang Lawyers to help with my tax planning, trust planning and estate planning. He was super patient with answering all my questions and providing excellent feedback on how my trust should be set up.  I was slow to get things back to Sam, but his patience in helping customers is rare. Greatly appreciate the help and would happily recommend friends and family to contact Sam for Estate Planning Needs.”

Business hours:

  • Monday to Friday: 9 AM – 5:30 PM
  • Saturday to Sunday: Closed

Nuraney Law Group (NLG) is a small firm that focuses on business and tax law. Their team is only about five people, but they bring over 50 years of experience combined. You can feel that depth of knowledge when you talk to them.

What stood out the most for us was how personal their service feels. One client shared that when they were selling their business, their lawyer didn’t just handle the paperwork. He even met them at the bank to make sure the sale went smoothly.

An accountant we spoke to also recommends them often because they handle everything in one place. They handle business incorporations, estate planning, and tax dispute work. It’s nice if you want to save time and avoid dealing with multiple firms.

If we could critique something, it’d be that their website doesn’t list any pricing, so you’ll have to reach out to get an idea of costs. It’d be helpful if they were more transparent about that upfront, especially for smaller businesses that have a limited budget.

However, we appreciate that they offer a free 30-minute consultation. It makes it easier for prospective clients to get initial advice without pressure.

Also, because they’re a small team, we imagine things could get busy at times. You might need extra patience when you contact them.

Pros

  • 50 years of combined experience
  • Very supportive lawyers
  • Full range of services
  • Great choice for clients with multiple legal needs
  • Free 30-minute consultation
  • Often recommended by accountants

Cons

  • No pricing listed online
  • Potential for slower response times

Their team provides excellent customer service and advice

“Nuraney Law Group is a great firm to work with. They are very professional, responsive and care about their clients.  Arif and his team provide excellent customer service, advice and have always exceeded our expectations!”

-Candace B., Google review

Extremely professional and knowledgable

“Arif and his team are extremely professional and knowledgeable! Arif is always very friendly and answers all my questions, no matter how small. They are a very dedicated team and always respond to questions quickly. They have the best service out there! They helped me incorporate my company. The whole process was seamless. I recommend them 100%!”

Winright Law doesn’t mainly focus on tax disputes. Instead, they specialize in smart structuring and long-term planning.

While they aren’t a traditional tax litigation firm, we found their strength lies in helping clients avoid getting into tax trouble in the first place. We were impressed with how they handle incorporations, reorganizations, and estate planning, with tax efficiency in mind.

Their close work with accountants also stood out. It keeps everything organized, both legally and financially.

We heard from a client who had a tough time with the Empty Homes Tax. The firm jumped in quickly, worked outside of normal hours, and gathered evidence to win the case. We really appreciate the extra effort they make for their clients.

Their accessibility is another plus. They offer consultations by phone, online, or in person, which makes it easy for busy professionals. We also like their upfront pricing, so clients know what to expect from the start.

Also, if you’re looking for a firm that focuses only on fighting tax audits or courtroom battles, they might not be the perfect match. They’re more strategic advisors than aggressive litigators.

But for professionals who need long-term tax-smart legal planning, they’re a great choice.

Pros

  • Strong in tax-efficient planning
  • Works closely with accountants
  • Responsive and dedicated team
  • Flexible options for consultations
  • Upfront fees
  • Great fit for professionals

Cons

  • Not focused on tax litigation

I’m grateful for their team!

“I am grateful for the Winright team! They assisted me in successfully disputing my Empty Homes’ Tax dispute for two properties, which ended up helping me save a significant amount of money due to the Empty Homes’ Tax.”

-Yuan Quiu, Google review

They have always been extremely helpful

“I’ve worked with the Winright team a number of times. From complicated financing deals to simple real estate transactions. They have always been extremely helpful when it comes to professional advice and following through on their commitments in a timely manner. I will continue to recommend the team to friends and family. Keep up the great work!”

Business hours:

Website

Borden Ladner Gervais LLP (BLG) has one of the biggest tax teams in Canada, with over 60 people across five cities. Whether it’s business taxes or some complicated international issue, they’ve likely handled it before.

We were impressed by their involvement in huge transactions, like acting as tax counsel on Pan American Silver and helping them with a $4.8 billion deal. That’s a huge number, so it shows that high-profile clients trust them with the big stuff.

Despite how big they are, they don’t give off that cold, corporate vibe. Everyone we talked to said they were all easy to work with and super responsive.

One client also mentioned how helpful it was that BLG is the only Canadian member of Taxand, a global network of independent tax advisors. He was grateful that they had easily connected him with other vetted experts in other countries.

We also loved how a bunch of their lawyers have actually helped shape tax laws in Canada. They’re not just following the rules, they’ve literally helped write them.

That gave us a lot of confidence that they’re staying on top of all the latest changes and won’t miss anything important.

That said, we didn’t get a lot of transparency around their pricing. While no one we spoke to complained about being overcharged, it’d be helpful for potential clients to have a clearer picture of what to expect when it comes to fees.

Pros

  • Massive tax team across Canada
  • Experience with high-value deals
  • Friendly and responsive
  • Global reach through Tax and
    Leaders in the field

Cons

  • Lack of pricing transparency

Highly recommend this firm

“I come from the corporate world, and I have worked with many lawyers over the years. LuAnne is one of the best I’ve had the pleasure of working with over the last decade, and I would highly recommend this firm to anyone looking for a long-term relationship.”

-George Anthony, Google review

Professional, well-informed, and pragmatic with their advice

“I’ve been a client of BLG since 2017. I have sought advice from their lawyers in Vancouver, Toronto and Calgary for various corporate, mortgage lending, securities and tax matters. They are professional, well-informed and pragmatic with their advice and solutions. Their administrative staff are great, too. Highly recommended.”
