My friend tried to adopt a cat from a shelter in a city that shall remain nameless, mostly because they’re still recovering. She left empty-handed, slightly traumatised, and covered in parakeet feathers.
Hearing stories like this—awkward encounters, endless waitlists, and questionable customer service—made our Waterview Vancouver writing team determined to find the good ones in our city.
We set out to visit every shelter we could, chatted with volunteers, and made sure each spot actually matched pets with people. Here are the shelters we trust and recommend.
How much does it cost to adopt an animal from an animal shelter in Vancouver?
It costs at least $6 to adopt a smaller animal like a hamster and at least $300 for bigger animals like dogs. This is just an estimate. The final cost will depend on the type of animal, the shelter, and more.
1. BC SPCA Vancouver

Address: North building, 1205 E 7th Ave
Contact Details: +16048797721
Operating Hours:
- Monday to Wednesday, Friday – 12 PM to 4:30 PM
- Saturday & Sunday – 12 PM to 4 PM
BC SPCA Vancouver is the only organisation in B.C. with the legal power to enforce animal cruelty laws. That means they can investigate complaints, rescue animals from tough situations, and even take legal action against people who break the rules.
Their reach is impressive. They help over 135,000 animals every year across 31 facilities, including community care centres, barns, vet hospitals, and even a wildlife rehab centre.
The adoption process is well thought out. You start by registering and filling out an online form. If you’re a good match, you’ll be invited to a virtual meeting before heading to the centre in person.
A lot of people really like this approach. The virtual meeting helps you feel prepared, and adoption counsellors are great about answering all your questions before you even meet your potential new pet.
The only downside? Some people wish there was a bit more direct contact at the beginning—it can feel a little formal, almost like you’re applying for a job instead of adopting a pet.
Blown away by how helpful and kind both the staff and volunteers all were
“I just recently picked up two adorable kitties from BC SPCA and was blown away by how helpful and kind both the staff and volunteers all were! I’ve vicariously gone through the adoption and fostering process in the past in the USA and BC SPCA far surpasses any past experience I’ve had! If you’re looking for a furry, feathery, or scaly companion; you should absolutely check out your local SPCA!”

The staff at SPCA were truly wonderful
“We first adopted Tiger from this branch in 1994. He lived for 18 years. A few years later we adopted Cameron and he lived for 16 years. This Saturday October 14, 2023 we adopted sweet sweet Coco (Coconut). We love her, she is five and the sweetest girl you can imagine. The staff at SPCA were truly wonderful. The whole experience was wonderful. Thank you for being there for all of us who love animals, and thank you for giving us the opportunity to ADOPT a special animal and not BUY one. June and Nelson. It’s now nearly October (we adopted Coco last October 2023). I am adding three new photos. She has changed so much. Trusts us, so much more affectionate and sweet. Such a perfect lady she is. She rules. It’s definitely a story of “From Rags to Riches”. She now lives 16 floors up with panoramic views of English Bay. She has become our world.”

2. Vancouver Pound

Address: 1280 Raymur Ave
Contact Details: +16048716888
Operating Hours: Tuesday to Sunday – 10 AM to 6 PM
Vancouver Pound is a pro-adoption municipal shelter dedicated to finding the best possible homes for every animal in their care. Each year, they place 200–300 dogs and small animals with families that match the unique needs and personalities of their pets.
Their approach is practical and compassionate, making them a great choice for adopters who want to support their local community while giving an animal a second chance.
We love their diverse selection of adoptable pets, including dogs of all ages—from playful puppies to wise seniors.
In addition to dogs, Vancouver Pound finds homes for a variety of small animals. They care for rabbits, hamsters, birds, and occasionally reptiles.
The adoption process is straightforward. Fees are also accessible, starting at just $20, depending on the animal.
Plus, the staff are knowledgeable and ready to help match them with the right pet for their lifestyle.
The only thing we aren’t too crazy about is that their resources and amenities are more basic compared to larger rescue organisations.
Thank you so much for the beautiful dog
“Thank you so much for the beautiful dog, a special soul and my little buddy. Loved by all that crossed his path. Piper Dog, Aka ‘Rolo’ from the ‘chocolate bar bunch’ – Sept 2006 – march 2020. The Most Loyal & Loving Dogs come from the Pound. God bless all that work here to help find loving homes for animals that have so much unconditional love to give.”

3. City of Vancouver Animal Services

Address: 1280 Raymur Ave
Contact Details: +16048737000
Operating Hours: Monday to Sunday – 10 AM to 6 PM
City of Vancouver Animal Services is a great fit for people seeking a straightforward, municipal-run option for pet adoption—especially those who appreciate an efficient, no-frills process.
As the city’s official animal control and shelter service, they focus on reuniting lost pets with their families. They enforce local animal bylaws and find new homes for unclaimed or surrendered animals.
While their resources may not be as elaborate as larger organisations, their community-based approach is reliable and practical.
Adoptions are by appointment only, so you’ll need to plan ahead. Still, adopters liked that it wasn’t crowded or rushed—they had time to meet the dog and ask questions without pressure.
The staff are knowledgeable too about the animals in their care. They’re always happy to discuss temperament, history, and expectations post-adoption.
However, they have a limited selection of animals, since their main focus is on lost and stray pets rather than large-scale rescue. Some adopters mentioned waiting several weeks for the right match.

I am very happy and in love with them
“For me it was a great experience, I thank the caregiver Teresa who helped me during the process of adopting my guinea pigs, I am very happy and in love with them, I would also like everyone who read this comment if they are going to bring donations to remember small animals as well, because we knew that they only make donations to dogs and cats and these little ones also need help, I am very happy to be able to give a good home to my girls. 🥰🥰🥰”

4. Northern Hope Dog Rescue Society

Address: 800 Hamilton St
Northern Hope Dog Rescue Society (NHDRS) is a foster-based rescue, and all their dogs live in real homes while they wait for their forever families. This means each dog gets lots of love and social time.
You can check out the dogs available for adoption right on their Facebook page, and it’s super simple to apply—just use the link in each dog’s profile.
One thing we really like is that NHDRS works with just one adopter at a time for each dog, so you don’t have to worry about competing with a bunch of other families. The adoption fee for puppies is $600, and there’s a $100 refundable deposit.
If you’re thinking about fostering, NHDRS has your back. They provide all the supplies, cover any medical costs, and give you one-on-one help from experienced case managers and trainers.
Lots of fosters say they felt supported every step of the way. From getting supplies to handling vet visits, someone was always there to help.
The only catch is that NHDRS focuses just on dogs. So if you’re hoping to adopt or foster a cat or another kind of animal, you’ll need to look elsewhere.
Northern Hope has by far the best medical information for the pups
“We adopted 2 pups from Northern Hope. I myself have been a volunteer with rescues as adoption coordinator so I know how difficult it is to respond to everyone, vet homes and make the right matches for the pups. Northern Hope has by far the best medical information for the pups, and thier description of the pups is bang on. I adopted Loopy formerly Sebastian and Loofy. I could not be more impressed with this rescue. Very honest, transparent and they really do care and love these pups so much. Thank you NHDRS for trusting us with our babies. We always recommend you to anyone looking. Much love.”

The team works closely with experienced trainers
“I’ve had the opportunity to foster with NHDRS for well over a year, and I am beyond grateful for their amazing and dedicated team. My partner and I became foster parents with lots of love and very little past experience. The team is always available to support us, providing resources and helping us build the skills needed to create a safe space for these beautiful dogs. Communication has always been timely, clear, and supportive—something that makes a meaningful difference when caring for rescue dogs, especially those requiring extensive medical care. The team works closely with experienced trainers to give every dog the best possible chance to adjust, thrive, and show their full potential.
What stands out most is the team’s dedication. The team volunteers their time and serve with quiet determination and care, always keeping the dogs’ safety, comfort, and well-being as their highest priority. For them, ensuring the dogs’ well-being is what matters most. They ensure each dog is safe and ready to begin their new life. This is an organization led by integrity, compassion, and expertise. We’re grateful to play a small role in their mission and would highly recommend them to anyone considering fostering, adopting, or supporting rescue work.”

5. VOKRA – Vancouver Orphan Kitten Rescue Association

Address: 2028 Wall St
Contact Details: +16047312913
Operating Hours: Monday to Sunday – 10 AM to 6 PM
VOKRA is an excellent choice for cat lovers who want to make a meaningful difference, especially if you’re looking to adopt or sponsor a cat in need.
What sets VOKRA apart is their unwavering commitment to rescuing, healing, and finding forever homes for over 1,400 cats and kittens each year. Their no-kill policy means even cats with health or behavioural challenges get a chance at a better life.
We’re impressed by their foster-first approach: every cat is placed in a caring foster home before adoption. This ensures they’re healthy, socialised, and ready for their new family.
One adopter shared that their foster cat arrived shy and scared, but VOKRA’s team checked in regularly and gave them tips.
However, adoption can take up to a week to get approved. You’ll need to act quickly if approved—some adopters felt a bit rushed by the 24-hour decision window.
Also, since VOKRA focuses solely on cats, you’ll need to look elsewhere if you’re interested in adopting a dog or other animal.
The cats from Vokra are all properly adjusted and cared for
“I love how much care they put into finding the right home for their cats and kittens. An online form, a hour long phone interview, and then follow ups until you go visit and adopt. It’s a beautiful process that screams “we only want responsible owners”. Stay away from places like craigslist and Kijiji and their terrible puppy mill operations. The cats from Vokra are all properly adjusted and cared for loving by the time you are allowed to visit them at their caregiver’s home. The first time I met Ruby Whiskerstein, she ran up to me, head butted my leg then flopped on the ground exposing her belly. She followed me around the entire time and even walked me to the elevator. Her foster mom said she was meowing at the door after I left like she was still looking for me.
She didn’t have to wait long as I adopted her right away”
